Recreating the Horizontal Magnetic Field at Colaba During the Carrington Event With Geospace Simulations

چکیده

Abstract An intriguing aspect of the famous September 2, 1859 geomagnetic disturbance (or “Carrington” event) is horizontal magnetic ( B H ) data set measured in Colaba, India (magnetic latitude approximately 20°N). The field exhibits a sharp decrease over 1,600 nT and quick recovery about 1,300 nT, all within few hours during daytime. mechanism behind this has previously been attributed to magnetospheric processes, ionospheric processes or combination both. In study, we outline our efforts replicate low‐latitude using Space Weather Modeling Framework. By simulating an extremely high pressure solar wind scenario, can emulate surface signal at Colaba. simulation, currents adjacent near‐Earth magnetopause strong Region 1 field‐aligned are main contributors large Colaba . rapid simulated scenario due retreat these as magnetosphere expands, opposed ring current dynamics. addition, find that best emulated observations Carrington event had minimum calculated Dst value between −431 −1,191 indicating may not be suitable estimate storm intensity for kind event.

The Horizontal Internetwork Magnetic Field: Numerical Simulations in Comparison to Observations with Hinode

Observations with the Hinode space observatory led to the discovery of predominantly horizontal magnetic fields in the photosphere of the quiet internetwork region. Here we investigate realistic numerical simulations of the surface layers of the Sun with respect to horizontal magnetic fields and compute the corresponding polarimetric response in the Fe I 630 nm line pair. We find a local maximu...

Strong horizontal internetwork magnetic field: numerical simulations in comparison to observations with Hinode

Solar observations with the Hinode space observatory led to the discovery of strong horizontal magnetic fields in the photosphere of quiet internetwork regions. Here we investigate realistic numerical simulations of the surface layers of the Sun with respect to horizontal magnetic fields and compute the corresponding responses in the Fe I 630 nm line pair. We analyze two simulation runs with gr...

Comparing ground magnetic field perturbations from global MHD simulations with magnetometer data for the 10 January 1997 magnetic storm event

[1] A model has been developed to calculate the perturbed magnetic field at various ground-based magnetometer sites using the output of the ionospheric currents from the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry Global MHD code. The model uses the computed ionospheric currents and the height dependence of the electrojet current above the ground, by evaluating the penetration depth of the precipitating energetic elec...

Magnetic field production during preheating at the electroweak scale.

We study the generation of magnetic fields during preheating within a scenario of hybrid inflation at the electroweak scale. We find that the nonperturbative and strongly out-of-equilibrium process of generation of magnetic fields with a nontrivial helicity occurs along the lines predicted by Vachaspati many years ago. The magnitude (rho_{B}/rho_{EW} approximately 10{-2}) and correlation length...
